1. Clear Structural Gutters
Start here — this is the most important item and the most commonly skipped. Clear leaves and debris from the structural gutters built into the frame before summer rains arrive and cause water to back up against the aluminum.
2. Rinse All Screen Panels
A garden hose rinse removes winter pollen buildup and general grime, and gives you a clear look at each panel’s actual condition — much easier to spot small tears against a clean screen than a dirty one.
3. Inspect for Tears and Sagging
Walk the full perimeter and check each panel for tears, holes, or areas that have started to sag. Small issues found now are quick, inexpensive fixes rather than bigger problems by mid-summer.
4. Check Door Hardware
Test that doors close, latch, and seal properly. A gap at a door is a direct entry point for the mosquitoes that become active as temperatures rise.
5. Look at the Frame for Corrosion
Walk the frame, particularly at the base channel and any joints, checking for the white, chalky corrosion or pitting that indicates a developing aluminum issue.
6. Tighten Any Loose Hardware
Loose screws at joints or hinges are easy to address now, before they become bigger structural concerns.
7. Schedule a Professional Inspection
Even a thorough homeowner check misses things a professional eye catches immediately. An annual inspection, ideally done in spring, catches developing issues before summer and hurricane season put your enclosure to the test.
