One of the more practical questions in planning a screen enclosure is simply how big it needs to be. Here’s how to think through sizing for different types of spaces.
Pool Enclosures
Pool cage sizing is largely dictated by your existing pool deck — most homeowners enclose the full existing deck area rather than a partial footprint, since leaving part of the deck exposed defeats much of the purpose. If you’re planning a new pool alongside the enclosure, consider deck space for lounge furniture and walkways, not just the pool itself, when determining the total enclosed footprint.
Patio and Lanai Enclosures
For patios and lanais, think about actual use: a small screened space (roughly 10×12 to 12×16 feet) comfortably fits a dining table or a couple of lounge chairs. Larger spaces (200 square feet and up) allow for distinct zones — a dining area and a separate seating area, for example.
Don’t Forget Circulation Space
Whatever the total footprint, leave enough clearance around furniture for comfortable movement — a common sizing mistake is designing to exactly fit furniture with no room to walk around it comfortably.
Height Matters Too
Enclosure height affects how spacious the area feels, not just the footprint. Taller enclosures (particularly with hip or gable rooflines) create a more open, airy feeling, especially important for larger spaces where a low ceiling can feel cramped.
Small Lots Aren’t a Barrier
Even modest urban lots can accommodate a screened structure — we’ve built screened patios as small as 10 by 12 feet that function beautifully as protected dining or seating areas. There’s no practical minimum size that rules out a project on most residential lots.
